Everywhere we go, our environment affects us. It can support new ideas, overwhelm our senses, shape our decisions, or allow us to relax. Sometimes a place inspires us so deeply that it finds its way directly into our artwork.

In Tysen Knight's work, the influence of his home in Palm Springs, California can be seen through recurring themes of desert life, architecture, color, creativity, and community.

MoxieBox Art partnered with Tysen to take that connection between environment and creativity one step further by developing an art experience for students. Through Tysen's artwork and educational programs, the distinctive character of Palm Springs and its Mid-Century Modern design continues to inspire a new generation of young artists.

A Conversation with Tysen Knight

Where did you grow up? Now that you live in Palm Springs, has your perspective on art styles shifted?

I grew up in New Jersey and moved to Palm Springs in 2011. East Coast and West Coast cultural influences in my artwork have definitely shifted my perspective on creativity. They exposed me to so many genres of art, which can be seen in my works.

What attracts you to Palm Springs?

Destiny and purpose brought me to Palm Springs. I was blessed with the opportunity to discover and connect with my inner self as an artist on a cosmic level.

To make art about a place, one typically has to stay curious about it. Do you feel curious about Palm Springs? If so, what caused it?

I was more inspired than curious about Palm Springs. The beautiful mountain backdrop, diversity, and laid-back creative vibe align perfectly with my artistic vibration.

How has Palm Springs affected or changed you?

Palm Springs has affected the way I view the world, and how I see creativity in everything around me. I have been able to really find peace, balance and a greater sense of understanding of purpose, journey and mission.

What do you hope your art expresses to viewers?

My art is a direct representation of inspiration and hope for every individual to discover a high level of self-worth and to share this discovery with the world, by paying it forward.

What do you like about Mid-Century Modern design?

I love the nostalgic architecture, quality, and timeless beauty. I believe all great creations will stand the test of time, and Mid-Century Modern is an excellent example of that. I love sketching and painting the MCM designs.

Do you have any tips for young artists who want to make art about their surroundings?

I wish for all young artists to become the best versions of themselves through this journey. To learn the history of your city or town, and add your unique artistic abilities to that history and legacy. There will only ever be one you, and the world needs your youthful creativity to inspire the next young generation of artists after you. The journey continues!
